About this Event

Join us for a practical, easy-to-understand look at the contracts, agreements, and documents small business owners should have in place to better protect themselves and their businesses.

This free small business class is designed especially for startups, new business owners, and very small businesses that may have been operating informally and are ready to put stronger business practices in place.

What We’ll Cover

Running a small business often starts simply—a conversation, a quote, a text message, or even a handshake. But as your business grows, relying on verbal agreements can create confusion, misunderstandings, and unnecessary risk.

The “Real” Fine Print for Small Businesses will help business owners better understand the role written agreements play in day-to-day business operations.

We’ll talk about the why, what, when, and how of business documents, including topics such as:

  • Why written agreements matter for small businesses
  • When a handshake or verbal agreement may not be enough
  • Common contracts and agreements business owners may encounter
  • What should be clearly documented when working with customers, vendors, contractors, partners, and other businesses
  • Why business owners should understand what they are signing before agreeing to terms
  • How better documentation can help create clearer expectations and stronger business relationships
  • Common mistakes small business owners make when operating without formal agreements
  • Steps you can take to begin getting your business records and agreements in order

The goal is not to overwhelm you with legal terminology. This class is intended to help small business owners recognize where stronger documentation may be needed and become more confident about the agreements used in their businesses.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is a great fit for:

  • Aspiring entrepreneurs preparing to start a business
  • New business owners
  • Sole proprietors and self-employed individuals
  • Owners of very small businesses
  • Businesses that have been operating primarily through informal or verbal agreements
  • Business owners who want to create more professional systems
  • Entrepreneurs preparing their businesses for growth or future financing

Whether you are still getting started or have already been in business for a while and know there are things you need to clean up, this class can help you identify areas that deserve your attention.

No previous legal or business experience is required.

Why This Matters for Your Business

Strong businesses need more than a good product or service. They also need clear records, reliable systems, and business practices that can support future growth.

Contracts and agreements can help clarify expectations, responsibilities, payment terms, deliverables, timelines, ownership, and other important details before problems occur.

For small business owners who are trying to grow, apply for financing, work with larger customers, bring in partners, or simply operate more professionally, getting these foundational pieces in place can become increasingly important.

This workshop is part of a larger effort to help Central Louisiana entrepreneurs strengthen the fundamentals of their businesses and become better prepared for future opportunities.

About the Small Business Opportunity Program

This class is offered through Louisiana Central’s Small Business Opportunity Program (SBOP), supported through the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI).

SBOP is designed to support startups and very small businesses throughout Central Louisiana by connecting entrepreneurs with technical assistance, business education, specialized expertise, and resources that can help strengthen their businesses and improve capital readiness.

Capital readiness is about more than simply applying for a loan. It means building a business that is better prepared to pursue financing and growth opportunities when the time is right.

Depending on the needs of the business, SBOP assistance may address areas such as:

  • Legal and business formation needs
  • Financial management and bookkeeping
  • Access to capital and loan readiness
  • Business planning
  • Marketing and customer growth
  • Operations
  • Hiring and workforce preparation
  • Business systems and recordkeeping
  • Other areas that can help strengthen the overall business

Participation in an SBOP workshop does not guarantee financing or approval for any particular funding program. Instead, the program is intended to help entrepreneurs better understand their options, address gaps in their businesses, and prepare for future opportunities.
