This talk will outline the history of the radical right in Aotearoa New Zealand in the last fifty years, including fascist groups, religious conservatives and ‘anti treaty’ groups. These groups had different aims, but all shared a common belief in intolerance and a tendency towards conspiratorial thinking. Although these groups have always remained in the margins of New Zealand politics, their ideas occasionally break through into the mainstream. Despite the wide variety of views in the radical right, they all tend to have a conspiratorial worldview and a mistrust of democracy. The speaker, Mark Dunick, holds a PhD in history from Victoria University of Wellington and contributed to the 2022 book Histories of Hate from Otago University Press.
