John M. Lawlor, Jr., professor emeritus of history at Reading Area Community College in Reading, and a prominent local historian and researcher specializing in the history of the Reading Railroad, will provide an engaging, in-depth audio-visual presentation on the East Penn Branch of the Pennsylvania & Reading Railroad that came to Kutztown in January 1870. John has assembled many rare photographs from the society's archive, Kutztown Mayor Jim Schlegel's personal collection, and his own trove, including his father's collection featuring rare glass and film negatives from the Reading Railroad MP&RE (Motive Power and Rolling Equipment) photo lab. In his younger years, John was employed by both the Reading Railroad and Conrail in the machine shops, so he brings a wealth of personal experience to his talks, which are filled with little-known details of railroad history in Pennsylvania. Especially for this presentation, John has researched census and business records of Kutztown and eastern Berks County to chart the employment of local residents by the railroad. Anyone interested in the deep history of Berks County railroads will not want to miss this presentation! FREE ADMISSION
