The People’s Poets is an open mic experience curated to amplify voices of color in the PNW. We aim to support both aspiring and established writers in our community with a platform to share their talents. We believe all writers of color deserve a safe space where their voices are not marginalized. The People’s Poets is a home for creatives and community lovers to feel inspired, validated, and poetically nourished. With the alarming rate of gentrification in the PNW it is crucial for BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) poets to have a place to gather and embrace one another's voice, culture, and story. The People’s Poets is a safe space where everyone is welcome, but the mic is reserved exclusively for the BIPOC community. We are now hosted every second Sunday at Akadi!
Doors open at 1pm show starts around 1:30pm! Tickets will be $15 at the door!
This is an all ages event. Food and drinks will be available for purchase!

About the featured poet:
Danez Smith is the author of four collections including Don’t Call Us Dead, Homie, and most recently Bluff, a finalist for the 2025 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. They are also the curator of Blues In Stereo: The Early Works of Langston Hughes. For their work, Danez won the Forward Prize for Best Collection, the Minnesota Book Award in Poetry, the Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry, the Kate Tufts Discovery Award, a Pushcart Prize and was a finalist for the NAACP Image Award, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the National Book Award. Their prose has been featured in The New Yorker, GQ, Harper’s Bazaar, and elsewhere. Danez lives in the Twin Cities with their people and teaches at the Randolph College MFA program and the Black Youth Healing Arts Center in St. Paul, MN.
