Long before modern highways crossed Southern Utah, travelers followed routes through some of the same landscapes we know today.
Join Steven H. Heath, retired Southern Utah University Mathematics Professor and Utah Director of the Old Spanish Trail Association, for a look at the Old Spanish Trail and its history in Utah.
Used extensively from 1829 to 1848, the Old Spanish Trail connected New Mexico and California as an important trade route. Steven’s presentation will highlight the trail’s historic sites in Utah, with special attention to Southern Utah, and explore its significance as a National Historic Trail.
The Old Spanish National Historic Trail was established by Congress in 2002 and today preserves and interprets this important chapter in the history of the American West.
Steven has a B.A. in History from SUU as well as advanced degrees in mathematics and the History of Science. He has a particular interest in Utah’s National Monuments and National Parks and has visited numerous historic and scenic sites throughout Southern Utah.
Free and open to the public. No registration required. Handicap accessible.
