The Odyssey in Greek \u2013 For Everyone!

Have you ever wondered what Greek actually sounds like? Two experts in classical literature are providing the unique opportunity to learn the Greek alphabet and a recite lines from a Greek epic!
Join us for an evening of classic library programming and a deepening appreciation of one classical text in particular, The Odyssey, and of ancient Greek literature in general. Christopher Nolan's new film adaptation of the Odyssey has garnered quite a bit of attention and has made clear that this is a far from obscure text, but one that continues to resonate with a wide range of people. The themes, struggles, and story-telling techniques of the epic poem (and movie) capture a truly inclusive range of human readers and movie-goers. This event is open to attendees who have neither read the text or seen the film, but are merely curious about this classic story. Learners of all ages are encouraged to attend!
Dr. Johnson and Dr. Resinski will offer attendees the chance to learn some basic writing and pronunciation of the Greek alphabet as well as learning some of The Odyssey's lines in the original Greek. Attending this event will give you the opportunity to make all the jokes you'd like about actually speaking Greek! The event is free to attend and is intended for all ages and abilities as long as you can hold a pen/pencil (or marker) and are willing to feel a tad silly learning a new-to-you but ancient language.
