THE NIGHT NURSE – Halloween at Electric Avenue & Mrs J Rabbits
Saturday 31 October | From 5pm | FREE ENTRY
For one night only, we're transforming the venue. Come and see Electric Avenue & Mrs J Rabbits like you've never seen them before.
Long before the cocktails, these walls were a baby clinic. Sister Doris Bardsley worked here, caring for the women, children and babies of Brisbane who came through her doors. Ellen Barron, Eliza Bourke and Sydney nurses Helen Roberts and Monica Ayscough worked beside her.
One of the many babies in her care was Baby Ruth. Ruth came in at five months old weighing just 7lb. After months of steady care from Sister Doris, she went home at 14 and a half months weighing 23lb.
Not every story here ended that way. The original owner of the Broadway Hotel lost his son when the baby was just seven days old. Some say that if you walk past the hotel towards the clinic late at night, you can still hear the baby and his mother crying.
And Sister Doris? People say she never really left.
She's shy, and mostly keeps to herself. But late at night, when Woolloongabba goes quiet, you might hear her heeled nursing shoes clacking across the lower level, or going up and down the stairs to her office. If the lights flicker while you're here, that's probably just Doris coming down from upstairs to check on the treatment rooms.
