About this Event
The Next Question: Austin Salon
One question. Twenty minds. No stage, no slides.
The Next Question is a small interdisciplinary salon for people who would rather explore a difficult question together than sit through another presentation.
There is no keynote.
There is no panel.
There are no slides.
There is no requirement to arrive as an expert.
Before the event, every registered attendee is invited to submit one question they are genuinely thinking about—a question connected to a field, technology, institution, profession, or social pattern that appears to be changing.
Northstar Institute will select two or three questions to guide the evening.
Twenty people then sit together with a facilitator and explore them.
The purpose is not to produce one correct answer.
It is to make the question better.
WHAT KIND OF QUESTION?
A useful salon question should be open enough for several perspectives but specific enough to explore in one room.
Examples might include:
What becomes more valuable when information becomes abundant?
What part of professional judgment should remain difficult to automate?
What changes when a field begins moving faster than its institutions?
When does efficiency begin removing something we actually needed?
Your submitted question does not need to sound academic.
It should simply be something you genuinely want to understand better.
HOW QUESTIONS ARE SELECTED
Northstar Institute reviews submitted questions before the event.
Questions may be edited lightly for clarity or combined when several submissions address the same underlying issue.
Selection considers factors such as:
• Whether the question can support multiple perspectives
• Whether it can be explored without specialized confidential information
• Whether it is understandable across disciplines
• Whether it creates room for inquiry rather than a predetermined conclusion
Submitting a question does not guarantee that it will be selected.
