About the performers (pictured L to R: Olsen, Owens, Curatolo, Mendeke, and White):
Evan Curatolo was appointed Flute & Piccolo with the West Point Band in August 2024. He performs regularly with the premier concert band and marching band in various high-profile events, including concerts and ceremonies for U.S. presidents, members of congress, foreign dignitaries, and the United Nations, as well as the greater population of the New York metropolitan area. Previously, Evan held regular substitute positions with the New World Symphony and Fox Valley Orchestra. Evan is also an avid chamber musician, frequently performing with the West Point Academy Wind Quintet. Additionally, he was most recently awarded first prize in the Pittsburgh Concert Society's 2024 Major Artist Competition with his chamber partner and harpist, Arilyn Mitchell. Evan holds a Bachelor of Music Degree from the Eastman School of Music and a Master of Music Degree from the Carnegie Mellon School of Music. Evan's primary teachers included Bonita Boyd, Lorna McGhee, Alberto Almarza, and Anne Harrow. He can be heard on the Eastman Wind Ensemble album Brightening Air, featuring original compositions by Eastman Professor of Composition David Liptak, published in 2022.
Ashley Mendeke is flutist and photographer living in New York and has performed throughout the Hudson Valley and NYC communities, appearing on nationally-televised broadcasts for ABC and NBC, as well as local media outlets. In her current role as a piccolo player with the West Point Band’s field music group The Hellcats, Ashley performs in traditional ceremonies that honor the rich musical heritage of West Point and the Tri-State region. She received first prize in the 2021 Walfrid Kujala International Piccolo Competition. Prior to achieving her current position in 2013, Ashley toured with the American Wind Symphony Orchestra. Ashley received bachelor’s degrees in Flute Performance and Music Education while studying with Mary Karen Clardy at the University of North Texas. Her mentors include Bart Feller, Mindy Kaufman, Keith Underwood, and Tanya Witek.
Originally from McLean, Virginia, Katrina Owens is currently principal flute in the United States Military Academy Band at West Point. Prior to joining the Army in 2014, she completed degrees from the University of North Texas and George Mason University. Before joining the West Point Band, Katrina performed in the Dallas area with the Madera Wind Quintet and the Lone Star Wind Orchestra, as well as working with Eugene Corporon and the North Texas Wind Symphony on numerous recording projects. She has also performed with the Ohio Light Opera and the Franco-American Vocal Academy Orchestra in Perigueux, France. Currently, Katrina regularly performs with the Woodstock Symphony Orchestra in addition to being an in demand soloist in the Hudson Valley. In her spare time, Katrina enjoys hiking and building Lego creations with her two young boys (Alec and Evan), and her “bigger” boy/husband, Bill.
Torin Olsen earned his Bachelor of Music from the University of Southern California and Master of Music from Duquesne University. His teachers have included Robert Langevin, Jim Walker, Geralyn Coticone, and Damian Bursill-Hall. Torin has performed with the Albany Symphony, the Warren Philharmonic, Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Erie Philharmonic, W.D. Packard Concert Band, the McKeesport Symphony Orchestra, Vent Nouveau, and has been a member of the West Point Band since 2010. He has served as Principal flute and piccolo in the band and has been a featured soloist several times during his tenure. An avid chamber musician, Torin was a founding member of Pittsburgh-based woodwind quintet Zephyrs and formed “The Olsen Duo” with his wife Brianne, a flutist. Torin is also a passionate photographer and enjoys capturing the beauty of New York state. He lives in the Hudson Valley with his wife and five kiddos who keep life interesting!
Heath White is a piccolo player with the West Point Band’s field music group, The Hellcats. In addition to his piccolo duties, he is the drum section leader and director of the Cadet Spirit Band. He has a BME from University of Nebraska and MM Indiana University, and has studied with John Bailey, Thomas Robertello, Jasmine Choi, Jennifer Gunn, Erica Peel, and Robert Dick.
