Audubon Everglades is proud to announce the return of our Book Club this fall, presented in partnership with the Palm Beach County Library System. Together, we invite you to join a community of readers exploring nature, conservation, literature, and birds through inspiring books and engaging discussions.
Join us on November 16th at the Wellington Branch of the Palm Beach County Library System for a lively discussion of our featured book: The Feather Wars: The Great Crusade to Save America's Birds by James H. McCommons. James has been a featured speaker on our monthly Virtually There program, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to share his wonderful book.
About the Book
The Feather Wars: The Great Crusade to Save America’s Birds (St. Martin’s Press, March 2026) that tells the dramatic story of early conservationists who fought back when America’s birds were being slaughtered for fashion, food, and trade. The book's action takes place 100 plus years ago, but the lessons are as contemporary as ever, affirming the value of community action as a force for good in the conservation of nature. The complex and misunderstood relationship between birds and humans is examined in this history of bird conservation in America.
About the Author
James McCommons is a professor emeritus at Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan where he taught journalism and nature writing for 20 years. He is a veteran journalist, specializing in ecology, environmental and travel topics. He has written hundreds of general interest magazine articles and is the author of two previous books of nonfiction: Waiting on a Train: The Embattled Future of Passenger Rail (2009) and Camera Hunter: George Shiras III and the Birth of Wildlife Photography (2019).
