Marking the centenary of one of India’s most significant modernists, Satish Gujral: The Modernist Returns brings together over 100 works spanning painting, sculpture, drawing, mixed media and architecture, alongside personal archives, photographs and accolades.
Presented by JSW and The Gujral Foundation, in association with HSBC India, and curated by Pramod KG, the exhibition traces Gujral’s evolution across mediums, geographies and decades—from his formative years at the Sir J. J. School of Art in Bombay and the influence of Partition, to his transformative encounters with Mexican muralism and his later experiments with sculpture, murals and architecture.
The exhibition explores the seamless movement between these disciplines, reflecting Gujral’s enduring interest in form, material, surface and scale. His architectural practice, including the celebrated Belgian Embassy in New Delhi, offers another lens into an artistic language that consistently moved beyond the boundaries of a single medium.
Returning to Mumbai, the city where an important chapter of his artistic journey began, The Modernist Returns offers an expansive view of a practice defined by continual experimentation and a restless creative imagination.
