Carpenter Square Theatre (CST) is set to open its second production of Season 43 with the comedy-drama The Minutes, written by Oklahoma native and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tracy Letts. The play runs Oct. 16 - Nov. 1 on the Inasmuch Foundation Stage at Carpenter Square Theatre, west of downtown Oklahoma City at 1009 W. Reno.
The Minutes is set in the fictional small town of Big Cherry, and the play unfolds in real time during a stormy city council meeting where local politics and real-world power collide. The play was nominated for the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play and was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Director Rhonda Clark said, “Every night I laugh at the characters, and I also groan and wince at many things Mr. Letts has penned for them to say. It’s my favorite kind of play – a comedy with a strong point of view and juicy, flawed characters. Letts certainly drew on his personal history in a state with many Native American citizens, as he weaves that into the narrative, also. Audiences can expect to laugh at the many foibles of the Big Cherry city council, and may be a bit horrified, too!”
Cast member Dillon Rasberry says: Being part of The Minutes has been a dream. I’ve long been a Tracy Letts fan, but this play speaks to what is happening in communities across America. Mr. Peel is an Everyman who all of us can relate to, especially when it comes to tough decisions we must make in order to protect what is most important to us. Crafting this show with this talented cast has been so fun, and I’m excited to see how audiences react to this timely piece.”
The cast includes Dillon Rasberry as the newest member of the city council, Sean Spencer as the mayor, Jacey Nichole as the council clerk, along with Chris Crane, Stephanie Henson, James Coplen, Chelsea McIntire, K. Der Ron Vinson, Andrew Cohoon, Kenneth Chambers, and Lewis Mize. Serving as stage manager for this production is Jason Brackenridge. Set design is by Ben Hall with costume design by Elin Bhaird, lighting design by Samuel Scobey, and sound design by Nick Solomon.
Performance dates are Oct. 16 - Nov. 1 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings with Sunday matinees. Each show has 10 performances over three weekends. Second and third weekends include Thursday and Sunday. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets are on sale now at www.carpentersquare.com. All seats are reserved, and reservations are recommended. Regular adult tickets are $30 with discounts available for seniors, military, educators, students, and groups of ten or more. Thursday performances feature a special reduced ticket price, and CST honors the Allied Arts OKCityCard discount. Flexible passes, redeemable for multiple productions, are also available at a discounted rate.
Additionally, the Richard and Glenna Tanenbaum Gallery will feature the artwork of Elin Bhaird and Kathryn McGill who are both well-known in the Oklahoma City theater scene. Their work will be on display during the run of the show.
Free parking is available right across the street. Additional information and tickets are available online at carpentersquare.com or through the free Carpenter Square Theatre mobile app. The box office is open Tuesday through Friday from 1-6 p.m., and patrons may call 405-232-6500.
Since its founding in 1984, Carpenter Square Theatre has produced thoughtful, ground-breaking, contemporary theater works aimed at sophisticated audiences in the Oklahoma City metro area. Plays are presented in an intimate setting with seating for 120. The theatre also houses a lobby art gallery and a bar, and the audience may take refreshments inside the theatre.
