The Milk return with Borderlands ~ a cinematic soul record following their acclaimed success with Favourite Worry (6 Music Album of the Year, prod. Paul Butler of The Bees) and Tales from the Thames Delta (Apple Album of the Year / Top 40, released on Sony), Cages & Live At Union Chapel Album.
The new record “Borderlands” (Sept 2025) blends soul, jazz, indie, alternative, and rock with roots deep in soul, pushing their sound into bold cinematic territory with huge production value. Not many labels are making records like this ~ it’s too time-consuming, too complex! The illustrious writing and production has achieved acclaim across (international) print, online & radio coverage.
Emerging from the heart of Essex's commuter towns, The Milk - comprising lifelong friends Rick Nunn (lead vocals, guitar), Mitch Ayling (drums), Luke Ayling (bass), and Dan Le Gresley (guitar) - have spent nearly three decades crafting a sound that seamlessly fuses the raw energy of 60s soul with the sophistication of modern funk and jazz.
Their debut album, "Tales from the Thames Delta" (2012), catapulted them into the UK Top 40 and earned them the title of Apple iTunes Band of the Year. This initial success was followed by the critically acclaimed "Favourite Worry," a cinematic opus that showcased their evolution towards lush arrangements and harmonious melodies, earning BBC 6 Music's Album of the Year in 2015.
In January 2020, The Milk released their third studio album, "Cages," an impassioned conversation with the world, addressing themes of societal division and personal introspection.
The band's journey has been punctuated by personal milestones - marriages, births, and the inevitable farewells - all of which have woven rich textures into their music. Their forthcoming album, "Borderlands," stands as a testament to their resilience and artistic growth, promising a tapestry of soulful melodies and intricate rhythms that reflect both their personal and collective experiences.
Over the years, The Milk have graced prestigious stages, from Glastonbury to the Isle of Wight Festival, and have sold out iconic venues like Shepherd's Bush Empire. Their discography, now encompassing four studio albums and a live recording from Union Chapel, captures the magnetic energy of their performances.
Frontman Rick Nunn's vocal prowess, often likened to the legendary Steve Winwood, channels the soulful spirit of icons like Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers, infusing each lyric with heartfelt authenticity. The Milk continue to solidify their place as pioneers of cinematic soul, offering a sound that is both timeless and refreshingly contemporary.
With the new record Borderlands achieving more acclaim for the band and their music, The Milk are ready to go and take their music to new heights. See you down the front!
