Create your own handcrafted ceramic matcha tea set!
Discover the beauty of functional pottery in this six-week intermediate workshop inspired by the Japanese matcha tea ritual.
Designed for students with basic wheel-throwing experience, this hands-on workshop takes your pottery skills beyond the basics as you create a coordinated collection of ceramics for preparing, serving, and enjoying matcha.
Throughout the six weeks, you’ll explore new throwing techniques, refine your forms, and experiment with thoughtful details that make handmade pottery both beautiful and functional.
What You’ll Create
Week 1: Matcha Bowls (Chawan)
Explore the art of throwing matcha bowls, focusing on graceful curves, comfortable rims, and balanced proportions.
Week 2: Bamboo Whisk Holders
Create a ceramic whisk holder designed to support and preserve the shape of a traditional bamboo matcha whisk. You’ll also trim and refine your matcha bowls.
Week 3: Lidded Matcha Jars
Learn techniques for throwing small covered vessels, including creating galleries, measuring with calipers, and fitting lids.
Week 4: Japanese Pouring Bowls (Katakuchi)
Explore altered forms as you create elegant pouring vessels with carefully shaped spouts. You’ll also begin your wheel-thrown serving tray.
Week 5: Matcha Serving Trays & Finishing Touches
Trim and refine your serving tray, explore softly scalloped rims, and complete the finishing details on your ceramic collection.
Week 6: Glaze Night!
Bring your collection together with beautiful glaze combinations. Explore color, texture, and surface design as you prepare your pieces for their final firing.

Enrolled students will have access to the studio at any time to work on their ceramic projects as long as there is a member present to let them in.
Students will be working with stoneware clay and glazes. They are the same materials used in the production of high-fired stoneware which is fired to 2118 to 2165 degrees Fahrenheit, resulting in pieces that are all food, microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.
The class fee includes all the tools and materials (including up to 25-lb of clay), shelf storage and the ability to fire 10 finished pieces. Additional pieces may be fired at the usual studio rate based on the size of the object.
IMPORTANT: Class is open to ages 16 and up.
