In 1776, not everyone were patriots. In fact, it is estimated that there were as many colonists loyal to British King George the Third as those who wanted independence. This difference of opinion led to America's first civil war, pitting neighbor against neighbor, friend against friend, and even family members against each other (think Benjamin Franklin and his son William). Who were these Loyalists and what was so compelling to these individuals to stay loyal to the King? Why were they willing to pay higher taxes and not have a voice across "the pond"?.
