MODULE 1
MUSICAL UNDERSTANDING: A BRIDGE BETWEEN CULTURES

FRIDAY 13 | FROM 20:00
WELCOME & INTRODUCTION
• Presentation of the project
• Meeting with the instructor and musician
• Goals and expectations for the weekend
• Introduction to the relationship between music, musician and dancer
Optional for participants who are able to attend from Friday.
SATURDAY 14 | 14:00–18:00
THEORY, LISTENING & DANCE APPLICATION
• Context and characteristics of Eastern music
• Connections between Eastern and Western musical languages
• Introduction to rhythms and Iqa’at
• Rhythmic structures and time signatures
• Introduction to the Maqam system, the melodic modes of Eastern music
• Introduction to the concept of microtonality
• Analysis of rhythm, melody and instrumentation
• Practical demonstrations and exercises
SUNDAY 15 | 11:00–13:00
DIALOGUE WITH LIVE MUSIC
• Listening and responding in real time
• Recognizing rhythm, melody, dynamics and musical changes
• Communication and signals between dancer and musician
• Guided improvisation
• Individual and group practice with live music
13:00–14:00 | BREAK
14:00–16:00
PRACTICE & PERFORMANCE PREPARATION
• Practical application of the concepts studied
• Experimentation with live music
• Coaching and feedback
• Preparation for the final Hafla / Showcase
SUNDAY 15 | FROM 19:00
HAFLA / SHOWCASE
LIVE MUSIC EXPERIENCE
A final experience dedicated to practice and to exploring the relationship between dance and live music.
Participants will have the opportunity to perform individually or in groups.
From understanding to listening.
From listening to movement.
From movement to dialogue with the musician.
MODULE 1 – OBJECTIVE
To provide dancers with practical tools to understand music beyond choreography, combining technical precision, listening skills, musical intuition and the ability to communicate with the musician.
NOTE
As this is the first experimental edition of The Live Music Experience, the programme will maintain a flexible structure.
Training hours may be extended depending on the number of participants, the needs of the group and requests for individual or group practice with live music.
