Historian Cyril M. Lagvanec, PhD, will give a lecture titled "The Korean War: America's Forgotten Conflict" on Tuesday, October 13, 7 to 8:30 pm at the East Bank Regional Library (4747 W. Napoleon Avenue in Metairie). The Korean War (1950–1953) is frequently referred to as America's "forgotten war" because it occurred abruptly in the shadow of World War II and ended in a bitter stalemate without a clear victory. Early television networks had not yet established live or widespread wartime news broadcasts, meaning print and radio dominated, leaving a smaller visual imprint on the home front. President Harry S. Truman termed the deployment a United Nations "police action" rather than asking Congress for a formal declaration of war. Unlike the unconditional surrenders of WWII, the July 1953 armistice left the peninsula divided at the 38th parallel with a heavily fortified demilitarized zone, creating a frozen conflict that technically never ended.
Dr. Lagvanec earned his undergraduate degree in history from Baylor University, his master’s degree in British and European History from Tulane University, and his doctoral degree in American History from Texas A&M University. Through his long career, Dr. Lagvanec has taught at Jesuit High School, Tulane, Loyola, Delgado, Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, East Carolina University, and Texas A&M.
