Five time Olympic Gold Medallist Ian Thorpe will lead the inaugural The Junction Connection Lunch to raise awareness of mental health and help remove the stigma in the community.Ian Thorpe, nicknamed the "Thorpedo," is a retired Australian freestyle swimming legend who became the youngest male to ever represent Australia at age 14. Since retirement he has dedicated his time to many causes, but his most prominent work has been as a mental health and LGBTQ+ rights advocate. Thorpe has been very open with his own mental health struggles throughout his life.
Despite breaking 22 world records across his career and achieving the unthinkable for most, he says poor mental health can affect anyone and it can often affect you when you least expect it.
Thorpe has thrown his support behind The Junction Clubhouse model and the great work the service does for its members and those suffering mental illness in the FNQ community. When he heard of the inaugural Connection Lunch being hosted by The Junction, he jumped at the opportunity to support their efforts.
He encourages anyone in the community wanting to connect and support mental health awareness to join us for what will be a truly special event.
