For generations, Frank Sinatra has been one of those voices.
On Thursday, October 29, The Jazz Lounge at The Statler invites you to experience Sinatra in the Lounge, a special evening celebrating the music, style, and enduring legacy of one of the greatest interpreters of the Great American Songbook.
Featured vocalist Zach Carr takes the microphone for an evening devoted to the songs Sinatra made unforgettable, joined by the newly introduced JazzBuffalo Orchestra under the musical direction of trumpeter and arranger John Hasselback III.
For this special production, JazzBuffalo is introducing The JazzBuffalo Orchestra as its signature ensemble for special productions, bringing together outstanding regional musicians in configurations shaped by the music and the occasion. Sinatra in the Lounge provides the perfect setting for its debut—an evening filled with swing, sophistication, romance, and the timeless storytelling of the Great American Songbook.
For JazzBuffalo audiences, Carr has long been a favorite, earning perennial recognition in the annual JazzBuffalo Poll as the region's Favorite Male Jazz Vocalist. A respected vocal coach and Vocal Director at Matt's Music, Carr brings more than a fine voice to the stage—he brings an understanding of phrasing, interpretation, and how to tell the story inside a song.
Carr is also no stranger to the Sinatra songbook, having previously been featured by JazzBuffalo in Summer Wind: The Music of Frank Sinatra. For Sinatra in the Lounge, he returns to this timeless repertoire not to imitate Sinatra, but to capture what made these songs endure: the swing, the lyric, the storytelling, and the unmistakable feeling behind the music.
And what a songbook it is.
Sinatra possessed a remarkable ability to inhabit a song. He could swing with effortless confidence one moment and make a late-night ballad feel deeply personal the next. His phrasing, sense of rhythm, and attention to the meaning of a lyric transformed standards by Cole Porter, George and Ira Gershwin, Rodgers and Hart, Harold Arlen, and many others into performances that have endured across generations.
Sinatra in the Lounge will celebrate that legacy without attempting to imitate it.
