Art Smith (1917–1982) was a masterful Black jeweler whose bold, body-centered designs still influence makers today. His story is told in a new book by Joanne Hyppolite and Toni Greenbaum.Join us for a mix and mingle with Joanne Hyppolite, Assistant Director for Culture in the Office of Curatorial Affairs at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC), who will share highlights from the book.
Sebastian Grant, curator and adjunct professor at Parsons, will also speak about one special jeweler Art Smith inspired: my mother, Panchita Carter, whose work is in the process of being acquired by the NMAAHC. A few of her breathtaking pieces will be on display!
Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
Tickets include a signed copy of the Smithsonian-published book Bodyworks: The Jewelry of Art Smith.
