The impact of online immigration status checks on discrimination in the labour market against Black Africans, Black Caribbeans, and Muslims in Great BritainPaolo Velásquez
This study focuses on discrimination by employers against Black Africans, Black Caribbeans, and Muslims in Great Britain, based on their immigration status disclosed in their job applications. We conduct field experiments by e-mailing employers and randomising applicant names perceived as Black African, Black Caribbean, Muslim, or white British. Our focus is twofold. First, we aim to gauge to what extent these ethnoracial minorities are discriminated against in the labour market. Second, we are interested in measuring discrimination against foreign nationals who have unlimited right to work in the UK, but do not hold British citizenship. This is particularly relevant since the passing of the Immigration Act 2014, which introduced measures to make it more difficult for non-British citizens without proper documentation to gain employment.
Paolo Velásquez is currently a postdoctoral researcher at the Stockholm School of Economics, and a Research Affiliate at the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS) at the University of Oxford. He previously held postdoctoral positions at COMPAS and at the Centre for Migration Studies at the University of British Columbia. His research focuses primarily on ethnic relations, immigrant integration, and discrimination in the labour market.
Seminar will be held in English.
