International artistry at the heart of Welsh jazz
Three internationally acclaimed musicians with deep connections to Wales come together for an evening of dazzling improvisation, lyrical originals and infectious rhythmic interplay.
Welsh pianist and composer Huw Warren has forged a distinctive musical voice through his adventurous blend of jazz, folk and Brazilian influences. A co-founder of the influential quartet Perfect Houseplants, his career encompasses acclaimed recordings as leader and longstanding collaborations with June Tabor, Maria Pia de Vito and the ECM trio Quercus.
He is joined by two regular collaborators whose virtuosity is matched by their musical imagination. One of Europe’s most sought-after double bassists, Yuri Goloubev combines exceptional technique with a richly expressive sound, bringing his distinctive playing to collaborations with Gwilym Simcock, Bob James and Antonio Faraò. Drummer Andrew Bain brings extraordinary dynamic range and rhythmic invention, with international performing credits including Wynton Marsalis, Randy Brecker and Bob Mintzer.
Their international outlook is rooted in a shared commitment to the Welsh jazz scene. All three are members of the jazz faculty at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where Bain is Head of Jazz and Warren and Goloubev are longstanding tutors and mentors. Together, they have helped nurture a generation of musicians making their mark in Cardiff and beyond.
