Join us for dinner, a concert, and a one-of-a-kind cultural celebration!Join the Jewish Community Alliance of Southern Maine and the Azerbaijan Society of Maine for a special concert and dinner celebrating Jewish culture, Azerbaijani culture, and the history we share together.
Azerbaijan has a rich tradition of religious diversity and has for centuries been home to Muslims, Jews, and Christians alike. Jewish communities, including the historic Mountain Jews, have deep roots in Azerbaijan and remain an important part of the country’s cultural heritage.
We are honored to welcome world-renowned musicians Ella Leya and Sabina Rakcheyeva—both Jewish and Azerbaijani themselves—to Maine. Following a traditional Azerbaijani dinner, guests will learn about the centuries-old history of Jewish life in Azerbaijan and the bonds of friendship, cultural exchange, and mutual respect between Jewish and Azerbaijani communities that endure today: in Azerbaijan, Israel, and here in Maine.
Violinist Sabina Rakcheyeva will then perform a musical suite exploring Azerbaijani, Jewish, and Azerbaijani-Jewish musical traditions. The program will conclude with a screening of the short film Leila’s Violin, which tells the story of an American girl traveling to a historic settlement of Azerbaijan’s Mountain Jews in search of her mother.
The House We Share is a one-of-a-kind event that celebrates culture, coexistence, and cross-cultural friendship. We hope you will join us for this special evening!
