Following our presentation of the landmark 1961 city portrait CHICAGO: FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF A GREAT AMERICAN CINEMA, Block Cinema invites audiences to further explore the filmography of the trailblazing British documentarian Denis Mitchell (1911-1990) with this rare screening of 16mm films from the archive of Indiana University’s Moving Image Archive.
Venerated by Dennis Potter (PENNIES FROM HEAVEN, THE SINGING DETECTIVE) as “by far the most talented and humane documentary maker television has yet produced,” Mitchell advanced the medium technically, stylistically, and intellectually across a string of television films in the 1950s and 60s. In contrast to the Direct Cinema pioneers Robert Drew and D.A. Pennebaker in North America, Mitchell brought a personal and lyrical touch to observational documentary, blending a compassionate ear for stories of everyday existence with wry insight into the social structures that shape modern life. These major contributions have largely been forgotten in this country, despite the fact that some of his finest efforts were made and broadcast in the US on National Educational Television, the predecessor of PBS.
One of Mitchell’s most incisive studies of the American psyche is THE HOUSE ON THE BEACH (1965, 60 min) which anchors this program. The hour-long film examines the notorious Synanon house in Santa Monica, CA, a haven for recovering addicts initially hailed for its unconventional therapeutic methods before being exposed as an abusive cult. Mitchell focuses on the daily rhythms of communal life, the moving and often harrowing stories of its members, and the spectacle of the infamous “Synanon Game”, a shockingly antagonistic form of group therapy developed by controversial founder Charles "Chuck" Dederich. Presented without commentary, this ironic yet open-minded work showcases Mitchell’s unparalleled ability to sketch the essence of a strange and unfamiliar milieu.
