What does heaven sound like? Gustav Mahler had an answer, and he heard it through a child’s eyes. The finale of his Fourth Symphony, “The Heavenly Life,” sets an old Bavarian folk poem in which a child describes paradise: endless feasts, dancing, St. Peter fishing, angels baking bread, and music unlike anything on earth. Mahler loved the song so much that he built an entire symphony around it, with sleigh bells, sunlit melodies, and one unforgettable moment when the gates of heaven seem to burst open.
Hear soprano Sara Heaton bring that vision to life on Sunday, November 8 at the Cabot.
