The Programme

The Gustav Holst Ensemble will be performing at St Michael & All Angels Church, Bath Road, W4, on Saturday 7 November 2026.

About the music

The concert opens with Beethoven's String Trio in C minor, Op. 9 No. 3, widely regarded as one of the greatest works ever written for string trio. Composed in 1798, it forms part of the remarkable Op. 9 set, which Beethoven himself considered his finest compositions to date. Dramatic, intensely expressive and full of rhythmic vitality, the work combines classical elegance with the unmistakable boldness that would come to define his mature style. Its passionate opening movement, lyrical Adagio, spirited Scherzo and exhilarating finale make it one of the crowning achievements of the string trio repertoire.

The second half features Schubert's Piano Quintet in A major, D.667, "The Trout", one of the most beloved works in the chamber music repertoire. Composed in 1819, the quintet is scored for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass, creating a uniquely warm and radiant sonority. Overflowing with Schubert's extraordinary gift for melody, the work balances lyrical beauty with infectious vitality. Its famous fourth movement presents a sparkling set of variations on Schubert's song Die Forelle ("The Trout"), before an exuberant finale brings the concert to a brilliant conclusion.

Together, these two masterpieces offer a richly rewarding evening of chamber music, pairing Beethoven's dramatic intensity with Schubert's radiant lyricism and melodic imagination.
