an accessible evening lecture in a former punk bar. Dr. Chris Hoff and local helpers on what therapy is becoming.
A world-class scholar and professor of therapy and culture, Dr. Chris Hoff, will give a talk in a bar to a room full of therapists, social workers, students and interested community members. Dr. Hoff's talk will include ideas from his latest writing and lectures, inviting us to consider possibilities about the future of talk therapy in North America. Dr. Hoff will be joined by local therapists/activists/social workers discussing helping work being practiced and reimagined right here in Winnipeg.
Come as you are and sit back with a drink (or non-alcoholic bev) and possibly a slice of local pizza and hear a cutting-edge talk that focuses on reimagining what you thought you knew about therapy and therapists.

This event is open to everyone: therapists, social workers, students, folks who've been in therapy, folks who've been failed by it, and anyone curious about what care could look like next; anyone interested in hearing a great talk.
the evening will be presented as an informal lecture and is based in part on Dr’s Hoff’s Keynote address for a therapy event he hosted; “Dangerous Ideas: a Therapy Salon.” Though this talk is somewhat geared towards those who have studied the theory and practice of therapy in some way, ANYONE with an interest in understanding contemporary therapy ideas, theory, and practice, is welcome!
Academia is known for its inaccessibility to knowledge – so we chose to host a world-class academic to speak to interested folx, in a punk bar in downtown Winnipeg. The Royal Albert Arms was a working class pub built in 1920 - we're thrilled that they happily agreed to host us and even helped make this accessible to as many folks as possible.
this event held on the ancestral lands of the Anishinaabeg, Ininiwak, Anishininewuk, Dakota Oyate, and the homeland of the Red River Métis.

about the headliner, Dr. Chris Hoff:
Dr. Chris Hoff is the Founder of the California Family Institute, creator of the Cultural Architect framework for therapists, co-editor of The Encyclopedia of Radical Helping, host of the Radical Therapist Podcast, cultural critic, substack writer and artist.
Chris is a narrative therapist, teacher and writer. His upcoming book, “Contemporary Narrative Therapy, Maps and Methods for Collaborative Clinical Practice”, is being released in November 2026.
Chris’s substack writing addresses topics like: how therapy’s future will be impacted by the end of Neoliberalism and the emergence of tech feudalism; the advancement of anti-intellectualism in our field; the declining state of post-secondary educational programs for therapists in the United States; how futurism can inform our practices and help us imagine new possibilities for the future of therapy, among many other fascinating topics. Chris facilitates groups for therapists and creatives that assist them in composing alternative futures for their work and lives while taking our present political realities seriously. He invites his audiences to engage seriously with pluriversal thinking and to develop their unique skills and imagination for reimagining hope in the future we're being given.
Plus, hear from award-winning social worker Mitch Bourbonniere of Okichidah Pimahtisiwin Kiskinawmatowin, (OPK) sharing about his long career here in Winnipeg. Mitch completed his MSW in 1994, and has been a community based social worker for decades. His community patrol work is not only legendary, it has been adapted all over Winnipeg and all over the world. His approach to supporting folks is radically kind and insists on modelling wraparound care for everyone. Mitch is the father of three beautiful human beings, and has dedicated his life to them and to working for the people. Apart from spending time with family and friends, Mitch's favourite moments as he transitions into retirement are doing Main street walks handing out food, clothing, love and kindness out of 605 Main St. Mitch also loves supporting and participating in men’s groups, both in Winnipeg and in Foxlake Cree Nation.
Our second local speaker is Allison Dyck of the MB Harm Reduction Network, who will speak about local efforts in radical care as efforts to respond to the drug poisoning epidemic continue to evolve and need new creativity and innovation.
the next day:
Dr. Hoff leads a full-day workshop for therapists; Narrative Therapy for Our Times, on December 4th at Red River College Polytechnic - join us if you can!
