Join Save Section 9, Rev. Kev McCall, the New York Neighborhoods Coalition, Council Member Chris Banks, and Council Member Elsie Encarnacion for a timely conversation about the future of public housing in New York City.Public housing residents deserve safe, well-maintained homes, lasting investments in their communities, and a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their futures. But with mounting repair needs, proposed demolitions, and the expansion of privatization, we must ask: What will it take to preserve public housing and ensure it delivers on its promise?
Together, tenants, community leaders, allies, and policymakers will explore some of the most pressing questions facing public housing today:
Understanding Section 9: What is traditional public housing, and why does preserving it matter?
Funding the future: What does NYCHA need to succeed, address its repair backlog, and maintain safe, healthy homes?
Getting repairs done: How can we ensure tenants receive timely, lasting repairs and accountability for their homes?
Beyond privatization: Is converting public housing to private management the only path to rehabilitation, or can we pursue comprehensive modernization while preserving public ownership?
The threat of demolition: What is at stake for Fulton, Elliott, Chelsea, Meltzer, and Red Hook West Houses, and what alternatives to demolition should be considered?
Lessons from HOPE VI: What can we learn from communities that experienced demolition and redevelopment under the federal HOPE VI program?
Tenant experiences under PACT/RAD: What has privatization meant for residents, repairs, affordability, and accountability?
Public investment and priorities: How are housing funds allocated, who benefits, and how can we ensure resources reach developments based on need?
Building solutions together: What can tenants, community organizations, and elected officials do to preserve public housing, secure the resources it needs, and shape its future?
This is an opportunity to share experiences, examine policy choices, challenge assumptions, and build a vision for public housing that puts residents first.
Public housing is worth fighting for. Its future should be shaped by the people who call it home.
