About this Event
The philosopher Roger Scruton was the inaugural professor of philosophy at the University of Buckingham and left a powerful legacy of defending traditional culture, local community attachment, and aesthetic beauty - often posed as an antidote to perceived modern rootlessness. He published more than forty books in philosophy, aesthetics, and politics, with his works translated into dozens of languages. Scruton used the term "oikophilia," meaning the love of home, to explain why people need deep ties to their traditions and history and argued that a healthy society rests on shared values and quiet loyalties.
Scruton was appointed as the chief editor of the Sailsbury Review in 1982 and stayed in that role for eighteen years. At this special Battle of Ideas satellite event, the current editor of the Salisbury Review, Alistair Miller, and University of Buckingham post-graduate student, Daniel Silveira, will discuss Scruton’s legacy and more broadly the future of conservatism.

Dr Alistair Miller is the Current Editor of the Salisbury Review. He is a philosopher who writes regularly on philosophy of education and is the author of (2015)
Daniel Silveira is the co-convener of AFAF at the University of Buckingham. He is currently undertaking an MA by Research in Philosophy at the University of Buckingham, where his research focuses on moralising oikophilia. In addition, he has over six years of professional experience in marketing and he holds a BBA and an MSc in Marketing.
