About this Event
YOU DON’T HAVE TO GO TO CHURCH TO COME TO CHURCH. Step inside THE FRONT ROOM EXPERIENCE: CHURCH - an intimate, immersive theatrical experience inspired by a powerful chapter of Britain's Caribbean story.
For many of the Windrush generation arriving in Britain during the 1950s and 60s, faith was central to everyday life. But despite being Christians, some Caribbean newcomers encountered rejection, racism and exclusion when they attempted to worship in established churches. So communities began creating their own places of worship.
The front room became one of them. Across Britain, ordinary homes became gathering places where people could pray, sing, worship, testify, find friendship and support one another. These small front-room services helped nurture congregations and communities, with some eventually growing into the Black-led churches that became an important part of British religious and community life.
THE FRONT ROOM EXPERIENCE: CHURCH takes you inside one of those rooms. Set within the warmth of a Caribbean home, the production brings together storytelling, live gospel music, faith, humour and community.
The audience isn't simply watching from a distance - you're in the room with us. Expect powerful live vocals, familiar gospel sounds, laughter, reflection and moments that may have you wanting to sing along.
At its heart, CHURCH celebrates the resilience of a generation that, when confronted by a closed door, created a space of its own - a place to worship, a place to belong and a community from which something lasting could grow.
When the church door closed, the front room opened. An immersive production written and produced by Samuel Facey & Dave Prince and directed by Ray Shell. Four performances only in this first intimate run - 22-25 October 2026 at The Front Room, Croydon. Come into the Front Room.
