You already know what a fish fry means.

It doesn't matter where you grew up. Somewhere in your life — a backyard, a church parking lot, a block in a city you love — somebody fired up the grease, the music got loud, and everybody who was anybody showed up. That's not a memory. That's a tradition. And every Juneteenth weekend, we bring it to Randall's Island for the entire culture.

The Fish Fry Festival is New York's premier outdoor cultural celebration — a full day of music, food, community, and everything that makes us us.

Here's what you're walking into:

The DJs are going to take you through it all — DJ Self of Power 105.1 and DJ Freedom aka Big New York don't miss. The food vendors are going to have you going back for thirds. The waterfront air is going to hit different when you're surrounded by 2,000+ people who all came to the same place for the same reason.

You're going to see sisters in every version of themselves — locs out, natural coils, bone straight, waist-length, wigs, weaves, all of it — and every single one of them showing up and showing out. You're going to see brothers dressed for the summer. You're going to see families, friend groups, couples, and solo flyers who knew exactly what they were walking into.

But here's what makes this one different... HOMECOMING VIBES!

At some point during the day, you're going to see a group of men or women line up on the grass and do something you've probably only seen on a screen — if you've seen it at all. The stepping. The strolling. The call and response that sounds like it's coming from somewhere deep. That's the legacy of the historically Black fraternities and sororities — the Divine Nine — showing up the way they've always shown up. Yard energy. Homecoming energy. If you went to an HBCU you already know. If you didn't, welcome to the yard.
