Music is everywhere.
We sing, dance, play instruments, go to concerts, and use music to celebrate, mourn, worship and connect. But somewhere deep in human history, none of this existed yet.
So when did sound become music — and why did humans begin making it in the first place?
From the evolution of hearing and vocalization to some of the earliest musical instruments discovered by archaeologists, the story of music reaches far beyond songs and melodies. It is also a story about the human body, technology, culture and our desire to create shared experiences through sound.
Join Dr. Michael Rivera as we explore the archaeology and anthropology of music — tracing how humans learned to hear, vocalize, create instruments and eventually turn sound into performance.
Along the way, we’ll ask a bigger question: what can the origins of music tell us about what it means to be human?
