Did you know that the last land battle of the Civil War, also known by some as the War Between the States, took place right here in Columbus, Georgia? On April 16, 1865, Union forces launched an invasion from the Alabama side of the Chattahoochee River, an area that was known at the time as Girard, Alabama.
Join us for a FREE walking tour exploring the sites connected to the Battle of Columbus. This approximately 1.5-mile walk will take participants to the locations of the two bridges where Union forces attempted to cross the river, including the location where they successfully gained entry into the city.
During the tour, participants will learn about the events of the battle, the role Columbus played during the final days of the Civil War, and the lasting impact this event had on the area.
Your guide holds an associate degree in history and a bachelor’s degree in digital public history and volunteers in the archive department of the Columbus Naval Museum, where they have worked on a finding aid related to the Battle of Columbus. Through extensive research and study of the battle and the history of the region, this tour brings local history to life.
