Blessing of the Animals. The Church of The Good Shepherd holds special services to bless pets and other animals on the feast day. The feast day of St. Francis coincides with World Animal Day, a date chosen in 1931 because of the saint's affinity for animals and the environment.
From 2026 the national holiday returns on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the death of the Patron Saint of Italy. From the 4th October 2026, the Feast of St. Francis, will return to be a national holiday in Italy.
