About this Event
Two-Hour Interactive Workshop
Presented Chris Hartstein
What if empathic listening could feel less like searching for the right words—and more like simply staying with another person?
In this interactive workshop, we’ll explore what empathy isn’t, what it is, and how surprisingly simple it can be. We’ll look at some common responses that may be caring and well-intended—such as giving advice, reassuring, sharing our own stories, or trying to fix the problem—and notice how they differ from empathic listening.
Then we’ll practice listening in ways that help people feel heard, understood, and more connected to themselves. Through demonstrations, discussion, and plenty of practice, you’ll learn how to follow what matters to the speaker without analyzing them or struggling to identify the perfect feeling or need.
We’ll explore:
- What gets in the way of truly listening
- The difference between empathy and other caring responses
- How to follow the speaker’s meaning
- Simple reflections that help people feel heard
- How presence and attention create the “empathy effect”
- How to listen with greater ease, trust, and authenticity
You’ll leave with a practical, uncomplicated approach you can use with family, friends, coworkers, clients—and anyone who needs a little room to be heard.
No previous Nonviolent Communication experience is needed. Come ready to listen, experiment, and be listened to.
