Presented by The Decolonizing Lens, join us at WAG-Qaumajuq for a FREE screening of NIVINGAJULIAT. This 12-minute documentary explores artist Gayle Uyagaqi Kabloona’s latest wallhanging and her powerful reimagining of the Inuit legend of Sedna. Directors and screenwriters Shelby Lisk (Kanyen’kehá) and Tess Girard follow Kabloona’s artistic process as she transforms a story shaped by patriarchal violence into a vision of female sovereignty and self-determination. Through her wallhanging, Kabloona reclaims and reinterprets the story of Sedna, offering a contemporary perspective on an enduring Inuit legend.
Doors open at 6:15pm with snacks and drinks available while supplies last. Opening remarks will begin at 7:00pm followed by the screening and a post-screening slide show and discussion with director Shelby Lisk and Inuk artist Gayle Uyagaqi Kabloona.
Support from the Margaret Laurence Endowment Fund of Women and Gender Studies, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation.
