Lantern Making Workshop
Ahead of Thadingyut Festival, Burma’s festival of lights, join us for an afternoon of lantern making.
What you’ll do:
Assemble a lantern with a wooden frame and paper panels
Decorate it with Burmese motifs, including Acheik wave borders and Kanote, the lotus tendril scroll
Add a light and see your panels glow
Take your lantern home
The story behind the patterns
Acheik is a silk woven in wave-like bands, using up to a hundred shuttles. Similar designs appear on Pyu pottery and in Bagan temple paintings. You can also add a Kinnari or Kinnara, a Hintha, a peacock, a chinthe or an elephant. These motifs come from the Burmese court tradition and are redrawn for this workshop.
The workshop is held ahead of Thadingyut Festival, Burma’s festival of lights.
