🎬 Experience a powerful story of Cherokee identity, family, resilience, and the fight to preserve Indigenous culture through film!As part of the 30th Annual Native American Indian Film & Video Festival of the Southeast, join us on Thursday, November 19, at 6:00 PM at the Upcountry History Museum in Greenville, South Carolina, for a special screening of The Cherokee Word for Water.
Based on true events, this inspiring film tells the story of Wilma Mankiller, who would later become the first woman elected Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation, and Cherokee community organizer Charlie Soap as they work alongside the residents of Bell, Oklahoma, to bring running water to their rural community.
Set in the early 1980s, The Cherokee Word for Water explores the power of grassroots organizing, community determination, and the Cherokee tradition of gadugi, a spirit of working together for the common good. Faced with limited resources and significant challenges, community members come together to create meaningful change through cooperation, perseverance, and shared responsibility.
More than a story about bringing clean water to a community, the film celebrates Indigenous leadership, self-determination, cultural values, and the extraordinary accomplishments that become possible when people unite around a common purpose.
The film also offers audiences an opportunity to reflect on the remarkable legacy of Wilma Mankiller, whose leadership helped transform the Cherokee Nation and continues to inspire generations of Native American leaders and advocates today.
Join us as we continue celebrating 30 years (1996–2026) of the Native American Indian Film & Video Festival of the Southeast, bringing Indigenous voices, histories, and perspectives to communities across South Carolina.
