About this Event
The Black Imagination Abroad
Conversations with Artists Across the Diaspora
The DuSable Black History Museum and Education Center is proud to launch The Black Imagination Abroad, a new artist salon series inspired by the exhibition Paris in Black: Internationalism and the Black Renaissance.
Developed as an extension of the exhibition’s ongoing public programming, the series invites contemporary artists into dialogue around themes of Black internationalism, movement, identity, image-making, and cultural exchange across the African diaspora.
Paris in Black explores the ways Black artists, writers, musicians, intellectuals, and performers engaged Paris as a site of creative freedom and global cultural exchange throughout the twentieth century. Building upon those histories, The Black Imagination Abroad creates space for contemporary artists to reflect on how these ideas continue to resonate within artistic practice today.
Hosted by Danny Dunson, Director of Curatorial Affairs and Arts Education, the series combines artist presentations, moderated conversations, audience engagement, and social receptions designed to foster dialogue, creativity, and community.
The inaugural salon will feature Chicago artist and creative director Austyn Wyche, whose recent photographic work in Paris offers a compelling contemporary perspective on Black presence abroad. A graduate of Kenwood Academy High School, Morehouse College, and Columbia University, Wyche maintains a practice rooted in Chicago while working across national and international creative contexts.
As founder of the design studio Everything Clears, Wyche’s interdisciplinary work spans photography, graphic design, visual direction, merchandising, and cultural storytelling. His collaborators and clients include Google, Nike, Apple, Adidas, Disney, Adobe, and The Recording Academy. In 2022, he was recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30: Art + Style honoree.
The evening will include:
- A presentation of Wyche’s Paris-based photographic work
- A conversation with Danny Dunson
- Audience Q&A
- A post-program reception with curated music, drinks, small bites, creative merchandise, and a vibrant social atmosphere
This inaugural launch event marks the beginning of an ongoing series bringing artists, creatives, scholars, and culturally engaged audiences together in conversation around contemporary Black artistic practice and global cultural histories.
