About the venue
Located inside of the Village Park Athletic Complex in Wellington, Peaceful Waters Sanctuary is a 30-acre wetlands park with 1,500 feet of elevated nature boardwalks and one mile of walking trails. The Sanctuary features an assortment of animals and plant species native to South Florida and provides an excellent opportunity for bird watching and nature photography.
About the event
The Big Sit! is a free, annual, international birding event open to anyone, anywhere in the world. Founded in 1992 by the members of the New Haven (Connecticut) Bird Club, it is meant to be fun, and some people have called it “a tailgate party for birders.” The Big Sit! is like a Big Day or a Bird-a-thon in that individuals or teams find as many bird species as possible. There is one critical difference – all observations must be made from within a circle no more than 17 feet in diameter.
Our team’s Bit Sit! takes place at the gazebo located in the middle of the Peaceful Waters Sanctuary elevated boardwalk. From 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 am, we'll count all the bird species we see or hear from within this imaginary circle. The gazebo provides some respite from the sun, but bring drinking water, hat, and sunglasses. Participants are welcome to come and go as you please from the circle.
The gazebo comfortably accommodates approximately 10 people at a time and the location is accessible for individuals with disabilities.
