Upper Darby is not exactly the place you might expect to find a drag show, which is exactly why I’m producing a big drag show in Upper Darby. It’s at the legendary Upper Darby dive bar Mickey’s Tavern. And it’s completely free.I called the one and only Brittany Lynn to see if she was down with being involved, and once I showed her videos of the inside of Mickey’s, she observed that it’s basically Bob & Barbara’s (home of the longest-running drag show in Philly) before they broke down the wall and made Bob & Barbara’s double the size. She was thrilled with the idea of doing the first-ever drag show at Mickey’s and one of the few drag shows ever in Upper Darby.
And she’s bringing some major talent with her: Morgan Wells, Billy Cavallo, and Turnpyke, plus DJ Da Boo Boo to keep the tunes flowing.
There will be some live singing. There will be some lip syncing. There will be glorious costumes. And plenty of cheap drinks. (If you show up in drag yourself, I’ll buy you a drink. Just don’t order a double lol.)
I have explored many, many bars in Upper Darby and beyond in the county, and I can confidently say that Mickey’s is, by far, THE most LGBTQIA+ friendly bar in these parts. One of my favorite Mickey’s customers is a septuagenarian who sometimes shows up as Bill and sometimes as Emily. They were a huge Martha Graham Cracker fan.
Show starts promptly at 9pm. 21+. Free admission. Tip your drag queens and drag kings and, of course, your bartender Billy.
Plenty of street parking available. Note that Mickey’s does not have an ATM. But does accept cards, Apple Pay, etc. There is a Wawa mere steps away that has an ATM. Mickey’s does not serve food but you are welcome to BYOF.
