Each month, we select a published research paper relating to beavers to read, critically evaluate, and discuss. Beavers are fascinating animals with so many mechanisms for influencing the world. October is Bat Appreciation Month! This month’s paper highlights an underexplored but critical connection between wetland restoration and bat conservation. To mimic the effects of beavers and to attract them to restored sites, restoration practitioners increasingly install beaver dam analogs (BDAs) in degraded streams. Amphibians and bats are two wetland-associated taxa that are declining globally and have the potential to benefit from BDAs, as they are known to benefit from beavers. In work published this year, researchers in the Washington Cascades measured aquatic and riparian habitat variables, amphibian breeding occupancy, and bat activity at sites with no BDAs, sites with beaver, and sites with BDAs. How did amphibians and bats respond to human-made BDAs? Are we as good at creating habitat as beavers?
