Normalization of Deviance & Backcountry Decision Making with Cody Townsend
Join professional skier Cody Townsend for an updated presentation on the Normalization of Deviance—how repeated, unpunished risks subtly distort our perception of safety in avalanche terrain. Drawing on his evolution from pro skier to big-mountain backcountry traveler, Cody will explore how his decision-making process has adapted over time. From his home base here in Tahoe to the remote peaks of North America, he will highlight hard-earned lessons and modern examples from The FIFTY / FIFTY+, showing how human factors influence every line choice.
Cody’s trademark stoke and deep respect for the mountains will be on full display during a 30–40 minute presentation, followed by an open Q&A session.
Doors open at 6:00 PM, come early to grab a beer and snacks and settle in. The formal presentation begins at 6:30 PM.
About the Speakers:
Cody Townsend - Professional Skier
Cody has evolved from a California beach kid obsessed with the mountains to standing atop the pinnacle of the sport
From a successful alpine ski racing career to stunt skiing for Hollywood blockbuster films, or skiing the “Most Insane Line Ever” to ski mountaineering North America’s “Fifty Most Classic Ski Descents”, Townsend has proven to be able to ski the most challenging and dangerous lines with ease, yet it’s his affable, humorous, and joyful nature that has defined Townsend as “The People’s Skier”.
David Reichel - Executive Director, Sierra Avalanche Center
After graduating UC Berkeley, David began pursuing his dream of being a ski bum in the mountains. He has taught about countless avalanche courses, splitboarded all over Tahoe, and guided from Patagonia to Japan. He has worked for the Sierra Avalanche Center for over a decade, and he has been the Executive Director for six years.
There will be a HUGE raffle benefitting Sierra Avalanche Center, Tahoe’s local avalanche forecasting center, which provides a wealth of information to backcountry skiers, riders, and sledders. Their mission is to inform and educate the public about backcountry avalanche conditions in the greater Tahoe area.
