Mistral’s milestone 30th Anniversary Season continues just on the heels of Thanksgiving, ushering in the holiday season with a pair of concerts celebrating the glorious repertoire of the Baroque era. Twelve extraordinary Mistral musicians will come together for a festive afternoon of dazzling concertos, beloved masterpieces, and lesser-known gems by some of the era’s greatest composers. For audiences caught up in the whirlwind of holiday preparations, it promises a welcome escape into the warmth, beauty, and sheer joy of music-making.
Like last season, the performances will take place in two beautiful, intimate venues: Saturday, December 5, at 4 pm at Saint Paul’s Church in Brookline, and Sunday, December 6, at 4 pm at West Parish Church in Andover. (Please note the reversal of the usual concert days and the new 4pm time in Brookline)
For this year's holiday concerts, Julie Scolnik, in her final season as Artistic Director, has truly pulled out all the stops, assembling an extraordinary ensemble that includes four violinists, two violists, and three cellists—each a distinguished soloist. Among them is special guest cellist Leland Ko, who took top honors in three prestigious international competitions last year, including Third Prize at the Queen Elisabeth Competition, often described as the Olympics of the classical music world.
While Mistral's concerto soloists will, as always, take turns in the spotlight, this unusually large gathering of artists makes possible the performance of two particularly dazzling works: Bach's rarely heard Brandenburg Concerto No. 6, with its rich and unusual scoring for two violas and three cellos, and Vivaldi's exhilarating concerto from L'Estro Armonico, featuring four virtuoso violinists. Scolnik herself will take center stage in Bach's brilliant Italian Concerto, originally written for solo keyboard but happily commandeered for the flute—a bit of musical borrowing that has become something of a Scolnik trademark! In ever-changing combinations, the musicians will also explore works by Telemann, Biber, Geminiani, and Boccherini—the latter offering a delightful excursion into the Classical era.
