The Architecture of Exile exhibition features work of artists whose life and practice are affected by stories of Exile experienced by their forebears. The works are resonances of these stories. Exile is a state of geographical displacement with deep emotional and cultural impacts. It evokes questions of belonging, identity, memory, and transformation. Exile is a fundamental part of the history of the Australian continent. The traumatic exile of Aboriginal Peoples coincided with the exile of colonisers and convicts. As a group of artists, we thought that it is important to tackle these stories and their impact on society, through individual trajectories.
The exhibition displays the work of artists of different cultural backgrounds. Whether having experienced exile themselves, or having a heritage of exile in their family, they all have a way of making art that is underpinned by this heritage. Artists explore the theme of exile through art in relation to architecture and placemaking. Artworks can express, or counteract the conditions of exile, thus engaging critically with the spatial, emotional, and symbolic dimensions of exile. In the context of this exhibition with a focus on architecture and sense of place, the emotional expression is quite contained. The labels are part of the exhibitions, as each artist develop a specific vision of what an Architecture of Exile would be about.
