Come learn about a Front Royal quilt dated 1853 from the Laura Virginia Hale Archives. You will hear about the history of the Apple Pidge Star pattern and the mid-nineteenth-century people who made these quilts!
The talk will be led by Mary Robare who is an independent researcher, lecturer, author, and curator of historical textiles. Her dozens of lectures include presentations for the American Quilt Study Group, The Baltimore Appliqué Society, The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Decorative Arts Trust, the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, the Virginia Quilt Museum, and numerous needlework guilds. She guest-curated the exhibits, “Quilts and Quaker Heritage,” at the Virginia Quilt Museum; two exhibits of historical quilts for the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society (WFCHS); and co-curated, with David and Jenny Powers, “When This You See, Remember Me,” an exhibit of historical schoolgirl samplers. In addition to writing accompanying exhibition publications, her published research includes articles for the American Quilt Study Group’s journal, “Uncoverings,” and for five of their newsletters, “Blanket Statements,” one of which was co-authored with Lynda Salter Chenoweth. Mary has conducted research for the Britain’s American Museum & Gardens, co-authored articles with Betty Whiting Flemming for the magazines Needlework Arts and Sampler & Antique Needlework, and has written for several journals and books published by the WFCHS. When she is not researching historical textiles and the people who made them, you can find this former Broadway performer and current Shenandoah University Adjunct Auxiliary Associate Professor teaching dance and theatre to students of all ages.
