Wilder’s much-lauded classic is a film of contradictions: a romantic comedy about suicide and adultery, at once glaringly ‘Hollywood’ yet relatably mundane. Everyman CC Baxter lives a banal existence filled with sacrifice in pursuit of ambition, enlivened only by the vibrant charm of an errant elevator operator. Balancing quips with existential crises, it will break your heart and warm it all at once. –BFI
