Roxanne Shelaby
Dance is more than movement—it is an expression of the people and culture from which it comes. In this interactive workshop, Roxxanne Shelaby draws from her lived cultural experience and lifetime of dance experience to take dancers beyond the steps and into the world surrounding the dance.
Through movement, music, cultural context, and conversation, participants will explore how dance lives within Arab communities—from social gatherings and celebrations to the stage. We’ll look at the cultural nuances that shape how people move, interact with the music, and express themselves.
Designed to bridge the gap between learning dance in the studio and understanding it within its cultural context, this workshop invites dancers to deepen their connection to the roots of the dance and bring greater authenticity, awareness, and meaning to their own dancing.
