About this Event
Get Ready for THE AMANUENSIS!
Written by MacArthur Genius Ishmael Reed and directed by Bobby Clements. The Amanuensis is a hilarious, razor-sharp avant-garde 2-act play that exposes one of American culture's most brazen heists. From 1857 to 1866, Joel Chandler Harris recorded the oral traditions of enslaved African storytellers on a Georgia plantation - then published those tales as his own, immortalizing Br'er Rabbit and Sister Fox under his name while the true actors received nothing. In Reed's retelling, the trickster characters themselves refuse to stay silent. Br'erRabbit and Sister Fox rise up to help the original storytellers seek the retribution history denied them. Part sattire, part folklore, part reckoning - The Amanuensis asks who gets to own a story, and what happens when the story fights back.
