THE AGORA NASHVILLE | THE FUTURE OF FARMING, LOCAL FOOD & THE PEOPLE WHO FEED US 🌾
Friday, October 30 | 7:00–9:00 AM CDT
📍 Just Love Coffee, Nashville
🎟️ FREE TO ATTEND
Everybody likes to eat.
But how many of us really understand what it takes to grow the food that ends up on our tables?
Friday, October 30th, The Agora Nashville is getting back to the roots of our economy — literally.
We're welcoming Middle Tennessee farmer **Rhett Bradley** for an important conversation about the challenges facing local farmers, the future of agriculture, and what ordinary people can do to support the individuals and families who help feed our communities.
Farming isn't just a business. It's a way of life, a generational tradition, and one of the foundations of civilization.
But making a living from the land isn't getting any easier.
Rising costs. Expensive equipment. Land prices. Labor shortages. Unpredictable weather. Competition from large agricultural operations. Government regulations. And the challenge of getting products to market while earning enough to keep the farm operating.
The people producing our food face pressures most of us never see.
And when local farms struggle, the consequences reach far beyond the farm gate.
🎙️ THIS WEEK'S SPEAKER: RHETT BRADLEY
Our guest speaker is Rhett Bradley, a Middle Tennessee farmer who will share his perspective on the realities of agriculture in our region.
We'll discuss the economic, operational, and personal challenges facing farmers, particularly those working to maintain viable agricultural businesses in Middle Tennessee.
This isn't a conversation about farming from a textbook.
It's an opportunity to hear directly from someone doing the work.
Because there's a big difference between talking about agriculture and actually having to make a living from the dirt.
💡 WHAT WE'LL TALK ABOUT
🌾 THE ECONOMICS OF FARMING: What does it actually cost to operate a farm today? How do rising expenses for equipment, fuel, fertilizer, feed, and other essentials affect profitability?
🚜 SMALL FARMS VS. BIG AGRICULTURE: What challenges do independent and family farmers face when competing with large agricultural operations?
🏡 LAND & DEVELOPMENT: As Middle Tennessee continues growing, how do rising property values, development pressures, and disappearing farmland affect local agriculture?
⚖️ REGULATIONS & GOVERNMENT: How do agricultural policies, regulations, taxes, and government programs influence farmers' ability to operate independently?
🌦️ WEATHER & UNCERTAINTY: How do droughts, flooding, unpredictable weather, and changing growing conditions affect farm operations?
🥬 LOCAL FOOD & DIRECT MARKETS: Can farmers markets, direct-to-consumer sales, local restaurants, and community partnerships create better opportunities for farmers?
🤝 COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS: How can consumers, entrepreneurs, and local businesses work together to strengthen Middle Tennessee agriculture?
Bring your questions.
Bring your curiosity.
And maybe bring a little more appreciation for the people who make sure the grocery store shelves aren't empty.
We talk a lot about supporting local businesses. Farmers are local businesses, too.
And unlike most businesses, their products are something every single one of us depends on.
🤝 WHAT THE AGORA IS
The Agora is a weekly gathering built around a simple idea:
**Free markets and free speech are the same muscle — exchange without coercion.**
It's not a political party meeting, church, debate club, or another networking event where everybody throws business cards at each other and goes home.
It's a table where business, technology, politics, religion, philosophy, money, community, and ideas are all fair game.
You don't have to agree with everyone in the room. Actually, that would make this considerably less interesting.
You just have to be willing to think, talk, listen, trade, help, and build.
🗓️ HOW IT RUNS
Two hours. Friday morning. 7:00–9:00 AM.
Five moves:
1️⃣ Welcome + the house rule: Before you hire or buy outside the room, ask the room first.
2️⃣ 60-second member pitches: Your name, your business, one real need, and a shout-out to someone who's already helped you.
3️⃣ Featured speaker: Rhett Bradley on the challenges facing Middle Tennessee farmers, followed by open Q&A.
4️⃣ Open networking: Find customers. Find collaborators. Solve problems. Make introductions.
5️⃣ The close: Connections made, needs identified, what's next — then go attack your Friday.
💰 WHAT WE'RE BUILDING
The bigger vision goes far beyond networking.
What happens when people intentionally direct their money, knowledge, relationships, opportunities, and skills toward helping one another?
We're finding out.
🛒 Group buying power that lowers everyday costs
🧾 Better pricing on business and personal services
💼 Jobs and opportunities shared within the community
🔗 Business referrals and meaningful introductions
🆘 A needs network where members actually help one another
📰 A place to exchange information and ideas freely
🤝 Direct relationships instead of unnecessary middlemen
🌱 Opportunities to connect local producers directly with local consumers
Imagine a community where local farmers can connect directly with restaurants, families, retailers, entrepreneurs, and other businesses.
Where more of our money circulates locally.
Where producers and consumers build relationships instead of depending entirely on complicated distribution systems.
That's the kind of voluntary cooperation The Agora exists to encourage.
🙌 WHO SHOULD COME
Business owners. Entrepreneurs. Farmers. Ranchers. Gardeners. Restaurant owners. Food entrepreneurs. Real estate professionals. Community leaders. Independent thinkers.
People interested in agriculture, food prices, land use, local economics, sustainability, entrepreneurship, or simply understanding where their food comes from.
You don't have to own a farm to care about the future of farming.
And you certainly don't have to know the difference between a combine and a cultivator.
Just bring an open mind and a willingness to learn.
**Because the future of local agriculture isn't just a farmers' issue. It's a community issue.**
